    Artist Statement

My art career started with a box of crayons and a
coloring book at the age of three and I have been
honing my skills ever since! My professional career
began in the early 80’s painting portrait commissions,
    a practice that continues today.

I am self-taught in watercolor, with the exception of a
    beginner course. Being detail-oriented, I prefer a
realistic approach to painting using warm colors on my
palette. I apply watercolor paint in a different fashion
than is typically used for this medium. With numerous
glazes and high concentrates of pigment I can achieve
    more intense and vibrant color.

My artwork is influenced by so many interests that
bring me joy: flower gardening, people, animals,
antiques, wine tasting and a deep appreciation for
architectural details in the US and Europe.
Undoubtedly, there are more paintings that I want to
do than I have time, but there is nothing I would rather
do than work towards that impossible goal.

Class Outline
Learn to paint realistic portraits of people and pets in a friendly and relaxed atmosphere. The workshop will begin
with an introduction and lecture and each day. Cindy will conduct demonstrations on how to paint the common
elements of portraiture. Various techniques such as drybrushing, glazing, graded wash, wet in wet, and using cotton
swabs, will be practiced to successfully achieve painting life-like portraits. Students will learn to recognize hard and
soft edges, range in values, and create depth, paint skin-tones, facial features, hair, clothing, and “all those details.”

Students will work on portrait studies of children from line drawings provided, and will practice the techniques
introduced following each demonstration. Later in the week this knowledge will be applied to their own portrait, which
will be prepared prior to class.

Throughout the workshop Cindy assists each student with their paintings by walking the room to offer individual help
and instruction. Specially designed reference material will be distributed throughout the workshop. Our goal is to
research and explore the possibilities and for you to come away with a better understanding of portraiture. You may not
necessarily finish a portrait, as my painting style is slow and meticulous but bring your desire, patience and
enthusiasm to this class to create “Paintings that Sparkle with Life.”
