"Beginners and advanced
painters alike will come away
with a new understanding of
how to achieve a sense of
visual depth "

Want to add new dimension to
    your watercolors? Good
    composition is the key. Laurie
will teach you how to compose
your work to draw the viewer
in and how to use a sense of
    depth to hold the viewer’s
    interest longer. Unifying
    washes allow you to
    manipulate the depth of already
    painted elements. Once you
    develop a true understanding of
    how to utilize this technique
    you will realize how much
    control you actually do have
over the final outcome of your
work. Laurie is the author of
    Watercolor Depth and Realism.

Day 1-
A.M. – Overview of the five critical techniques which can be
used to create or increase a sense of visual depth in any
painting, any style, and any medium.  Discussion of working
from photos vs. life, and how to choose the best subjects and
viewpoints. Students will then work on small exercises Laurie
has devised to teach the basics of these techniques.
P.M. - Continuation of the exercises
Day 2-
A.M. - Students will work on creating their own
compositions based on prompts from Laurie
P.M. - Discussion on how to deal with common technical
mistakes and some quick fixes for them. Laurie will
demonstrate ways to save a piece with compositional
problems. You will learn that watercolor is not quite as
“unforgiving “ as you thought.  Students will practice
techniques useful in saving a piece “gone-wrong”
Day 3-
A.M. - Students will work on their own compositions,
working from their own photos
P.M. - Continuation of AM activities, building on lessons
from days 1&2
Day 4-
A.M. - Learn to “Edgy” day! -   Laurie will teach quick and
easy methods to create beautiful soft edges while still
maintaining control. You will learn how to make a seamless
transition from one color to the next, and how to effortlessly
reserve whites without hard edges. A great watercolor
requires the use of both hard and soft edges and Laurie will
show you when and where to use them to your best
advantage. Student will work on exercises to learn these
techniques.
PM- Continuation of AM activities
Day 5-
Students have the chance to bring in past work for critique
and discussion. Please bring any “gone-wrongs” (if you have
any!)  to re-work and save! You will have the opportunity to
re-work past paintings using the 5 techniques they have
learned, increasing the visual depth, and strengthening the
focal point. Any time remaining will be spent on completing
other work done in the workshop, and question & answer
time.

Class Outline
Add new dimension to your watercolors using some of the techniques Laurie has included in her book, Watercolor
Depth & Realism. Lessons learned can be applied to any painting style or skill level. Laurie will provide subject matter
for days 1 & 2, while teaching you how to choose what to paint and how to make your choice of subject matter work as
a successful painting. Good composition is the key! Learn, not only how to compose your work to draw the viewer in,
but also how use a sense of depth to hold the viewers interest longer. On day 3, you may bring your own photo
references or work from photos provided by Laurie.
The process of creating an initial drawing for a watercolor differs from that used to create other types of drawings
because of the need to save your whites. In this workshop Laurie will demonstrate her method of reserving whites and
softening edges, as well as a better approach to the drawing stage. You will complete a small painting using these
techniques. Watercolor is often called an unforgiving medium, but the unifying wash allows you to manipulate the depth
of already painted elements. In this workshop you will discover exactly what a unifying wash is and how to best use it
to your advantage. Once you develop a true understanding of how to utilize this technique you will realize how much
control you actually do have over the final outcome of your work. You will also learn how to use separating washes to
manipulate the picture plane. You may bring in paintings you would like help with on day 5 for critique in the afternoon.
