The workshop, which is designed for beginners to advanced painters, includes daily morning demonstrations with a step-by- step simple explanation of solutions to every problem presented by the subject, personal instruction, and class critiques. Mel creates a casual and friendly atmosphere allowing an easy, open dialogue with his students making each workshop a joyful experience. You will find that learning the art of watercolor painting outdoors on location is an enjoyable experience. Emphasis is placed on “The Big Three” ~ Simplify, Think & Paint Quickly, and Focus. We arrive on location at about 9:30 a.m. at which time Mel does a complete demonstration each day with a step-by-step simple explanation of solutions to every problem presented by the subject. The demonstration takes about an hour and is spirited with an easy, open dialogue. After the demo, students begin painting and continue to paint until about noon when the class takes a break for lunch and some relaxation. After lunch students continue painting until about 3:00 p.m. Personal attention and instruction will be given throughout. Questions are welcomed from students. If an individual has a personal way of working, he or she will be encouraged in that direction. At about 3:00 p.m., there is a daily class critique of the paintings done during the day. The critique is an important phase of your painting experience because we learn from each other. Mel creates a casual and friendly atmosphere. This informative workshop is designed for beginners to advanced students |

Santa Barbara is referred to as the "American Riviera" because of its wide-golden beaches lined by palm trees. Located less than 100 miles north of Los Angeles and situated on gently sloping hills above the Pacific, Santa Barbara offers a temperate climate and is known for its red-tiled roofs and white stucco-walled houses, its Spanish Revival architecture, and for being home to Stearns Wharf, which was built in 1872. In the hills above the town is the beautiful Mission Santa Barbara with a colorful twin-towered facade. A superb example of California's Franciscan Spanish architecture is the Old Mission. Minutes from the center of town, there is gorgeous wine country and the Santa Ynez Valley with its breathtaking vistas. Located two blocks off Santa Barbara's famous State Street, which offers great shopping, fine restaurants, and outdoor cafes, is the 200-year-old barracks El Cuartel, the second-oldest building in California. El Cuartel is the oldest adobe in the California State Parks System and houses exhibitions of historical artifacts. |
