Creating art that
transcends the ordinary,
Sharon combines
watercolor and colored
pencil.  "That way, I can
combine the ease and
spontaneity of one medium
with the control and detail of
another," she says.
    Create luminous colors, exciting
    light effects, and compelling
    compositions with absolute
    confidence and ease.  Sharon will
show you how to select and
    control the behavior of pigments
    and papers; understand close-up
    flower shapes and design, work
    with multiple painting methods,
as well as master the elegance
and finesse of loose washes and
sheer glazes.  Sharon is an author
and illustrator of the Fashion in
    History textbook.  Her work is
featured in the Best of Colored
Pencil 4 and 5; and in The Artist’s
    Magazine and American Artist.
She is a signature member of the
CPSA, a member of NWWS and
    Women Painters of Washington.

SHARON TIETJEN was  born and raised in Great Falls,
Montana, Sharon received a Fine Arts Degree from
Colorado Woman’s College in Denver. She majored in
theater and art with an emphasis upon 16th and 17th
    Century painting.

After establishing a significant career as a fashion
illustrator and advertising executive in San Francisco,
Sharon relocated to the Puget Sound area in Washington
State where she established a Fashion Marketing
Degree Program at Highline Community College. In
addition to administrative and teaching responsibilities,
she continued to refine her drawing and painting skills,
and developed a following for commission portraiture
    and custom interior art.

In 1992, Sharon became a full time artist working
primarily in colored pencil and watercolor. She has drawn
from her years in the classroom to become a popular
speaker and workshop instructor teaching her detailed
    style of precision painting.

Sharon ’s work is in concert with her serious devotion to
realism and attention to detail. This is accomplished
through her use of intense color, extremes in highlighting
and shadows, a meticulous respect for textures, and
occasional backgrounds bordering the abstract. Her
colored pencil paintings consist of layering pigments
from light to dark in microfine circular patterns on four ply
archival museum board surfaces. In order to achieve
dimensional depth, she will sometimes apply up to 25
    layers of color.

Sharon's watercolors exhibit the same detailed
workmanship with however, a more abbreviated number
of transparent glazes. Working once again from light to
dark, Sharon uses generous amounts of juicy, bold
pigments on 300 pound cold or soft pressed paper. She
frequently finishes the piece with a swipe of colored
pencil or pastel for impact. Her favorite subjects include
    animals, florals, and still life.

An accomplished painter and juror, Sharon is a Signature
Member and Merit Award recipient with the Colored Pencil
Society of America, Past President of the CPSA Seattle
District Chapter, and a member of the Northwest
Watercolor Society and Women Painters of Washington.
She participates in juried, solo, and group exhibitions,
and conducts workshops across the nation.

Sharon has authored and illustrated a Fashion in History
    textbook; is featured in the Best of Colored Pencil 4 and 5;
and has been published in Art Calendar, American Artist,
Artist’s Magazine, and the Seattle Catalogue. In addition,
Sharon has received eighteen national and international
    awards since 1998.
