Stanley Maltzman is a highly acclaimed landscape artist, as well as an accomplished author and educator. His skill in drawing and painting and his unique in-depth demonstrations are a source of inspiration to the many students who have attended his instructional sessions. Maltzman's art stems from nature; his love of working outdoors has labeled him as a "Plein Air" painter, a description that Stanley feels is accurate and much appreciated. Stanley is of the opinion that there is a sense of communion with nature that is captured by working in the fields or woods where one can touch, smell and observe the beauty that surrounds you, a "one-on-one" communion with nature, Stanley says, "it is an experience that cannot be achieved indoors". The quality of Stanley's work has received ever- increasing recognition and his popular book "DRAWING NATURE" which was originally published in 1995 has sold over 25,000 copies and presently is available in a reprinted soft cover version. The popularity of Maltzman's work and work ethic has led to Stanley's second book "DRAWING TREES", a compilation of many tree studies completed in and around the Catskill Mountain area. The book was published in the Fall of 1999. Stanley's work skills are also featured in other published works by North Light Books. His drawings and paintings have been widely exhibited in Museums and Galleries throughout the country including The Carnegie Museum of Natural History, The Bruce Museum, The National Academy of Arts and Letters to name just a few. His work has appeared in The Artist's Magazine, American Artist, Hudson Valley and Kaatskill Magazines, as well as many other prestigious publications. Stanley is also listed in Who's Who of American Art. He is the proud recipient of many awards, and his work is represented in many collections including the recent high honor of having his book and three of his works of art acquired by The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City. In addition to his many hours of nature study, Stanley is the Curator of the Greenville Library Gallery and a member of the Art screening panel at The Rensselaerville Institute in Greene County, New York. Maltzman's work reflects his words "I draw my inspiration from nature, and the work I produce comes directly from within. "
Artist's Statement:
Through the years students have asked what inspired me to paint a certain picture or what kind of pencil I use for drawing. My answer is, "it is a thousand hour pencil". In other words, the secret is not the pencil, .. it is the work, the devotion and the love of drawing. Art starts with the business of seeing. Nature inspires you with her beauty, but you, as an artist, must take the-elements nature presents to you and interpret them in the light of your own feelings to create your drawing or painting. I firmly believe that there is a certain sense of communion with nature that is captured by working in the fields or woods that cannot be achieved by working indoors. In natural surroundings one can touch, smell and observe the beauty that surrounds them.
