Brave Beginner to Advanced

LANA GROW.  I am a painter working with acrylic in
a “watercolor” way, often incorporating collage
elements. I am enamored with the process of
applying large brush stokes of color. Creating
depth and texture I combine layering paint and
removing paint. My methods include: removing
parts of the layer with alcohol, blotter papers,
    stamping, stencils, scraping techniques. This
reveals under-layers incorporating new color and
texture. I then apply symbolic or spontaneous
gestural lines to provide movement. Collage
elements will often come into play and are
incorporated into the surface. I love the way the
paintings shapes and forms begin to talk to me
and tell me what to do next. I work on several
paintings at a time, applying layers of color,
collage and texture. Sometimes I have a subject in
mind, but most often I work intuitively allowing
my inner computer to work in an automatic
response. “The best part about art is that you
never seem to feel old!” It is as if you are forever
the perpetual student and will never really grow
up. While on this art journey, you can never know
it ALL; there are continual exciting personal
discoveries. The journey is never boring and
always a challenge. Painting, to me, is not about
having a heavy heart and not about righting a
wrong. It is all about singing, dancing,
experiencing new revelations, laughing and feeling
joyful, being open to the world around me. It is
about: the activity of being creative, the mystery
of life, nature with her ever changing forms,
capturing, with my craft, a painting that expresses
my personal emotional response rather than a
subject or thing, Experimenting with new ways of
working in water media and collage, keeps me
excited and enthusiastic about working as an
abstract artist. My ultimate goal is to engage the
viewers, to stop them in their tracks having them
    experience enjoyment, intrigue and entertainment.

A bonus in my creative adventure has been the
privilege of teaching and sharing my discoveries.
This has given me a completion to my art passion
and has been a joyful addition to my artistic
journey! My teaching has included workshops
    throughout Minnesota, Illinois, Wisconsin,
    Michigan, Oregon, North Carolina, Alabama,
Texas, Virginia, Nebraska, Florida and California.
My work has been sold on the Internet at www.
    guild.com, galleries, one-person shows, mixed
media group shows, art fairs, public collections,
and corporate and private collections. My work has
been on displayed; Vines and Branches Gallery,
Three Havens Gallery, Art Holding Gallery, Art
    Resources. Northrup King annual Art-A-Whirl,

Class Outline
This class introduces new and experimental ways of painting with water based acrylics. Be ready to try one
thing after another as we move from transparent to translucent to opaque! We will be exploring the use of:
acrylic paint, heavy gel medium, soft gel medium, gesso, gold leaf, textures, stamping, stenciling, transfers
and collage. Emphasis will be to achieve line, depth and texture in your work. The focus of the workshop is
abstract; however, combining abstract with realistic elements is an option. Students will explore working on
different hot press paper surfaces and gold leaf. There will be exploration of beginning paintings in several
experimental ways. Finishing techniques will be introduced and demonstrated. Each day will include several
demos and time for the student to work. I will work with each individual attendee. We will explore the use of
design aids analyzing students’ work. You will be working on several pieces at the same time. Color mixing
and basic design elements will be presented through demonstration and visual aids. I will have a three-ring
binder available. This contains in-depth information on class demos, design, color, inspirational quotes,
marketing, finishing suggestions, supply sources and much more. Non-intimidated beginner to advanced
water media artist. Lana L. Grow is a signature member of the American Watercolor Society, Red River
Watercolor Society, Society of Layerists in Multi Media and the International Society of Experimental Artists.
Award winning work has been included in Splash 8, Finding the Artist With In, The Art of Layering: Making
Connections, Creative Composition and Design, A Walk Into Abstracts and Best of America Watermedia. I have
won numerous awards in International and National juried shows. An in-depth interview, my art work and a
working demo is featured in the American Artist Spring Watercolor 2008 magazine. Every participant has a
full table as in all AITM studio workshops for your personal workspace. There will be morning and afternoon
    demos.

My Objective: To introduce the student to new and liberating ideas in water media painting. I strive to provide
a safe and creative environment to explore without production stress. I hope to tap into the creative spirit of
the student and motivate their artistic voice. My goal is to, encourage students in their own unique creation
and to teach a class like one I would like to take. Use the techniques to explore possibilities of your own
vision. To inspire confidence and leave the student motivated and excited to paint. With time and effort on
your part, these techniques will expand and blend with what you already know and will be stretching your
    creative boundaries.”
